Self-Assessment

Learning Objective #1: Examine how attitudes toward linguistic standards empower and oppress language users.

My Paraphrase: I found that the ability to intake different forms of languages through community and the impact it has on a person’s life.

Evidence of learning: I achieve it by being open to different forms of language by not being biassed on who I talk to. Such as peer discussions, group discussions and learning about amazing authors writings. I listened to many TED Talks one of them really peeked my interest, “3 Ways to speak English” by Jamila Lyiscott:

In my online class discussion I stated, “I found this really interesting because the language she uses throughout the video is using her cultural background to express the tension in her words. She’s a “tri-tongued orator” using the way she grew up speaking English in a way to unite people of color and encourage more friendship, not racism. The way a person would speak to her friends she would speak the same to everyone. The books don’t have representation of the language she uses or people of color. She wants to break it by using her three different forms of speaking. This worked because having friends who speak English differently from the “normal” makes me understand why they prefer to speak in a certain way that others classify as the “hood”, it’s friendly and expresses what a person feels. The English language isn’t meant to be spoken in one way, it’s multifaceted.”
