Final Reflection Essay

Reflection Essay

Throughout this semester, I have developed my writing, reading comprehension, critical analyzing of the texts and my understanding of different perspectives. The ability for me not only to understand my challenges and solutions throughout the semester is to be able to carry it on to my academic and professional years in the future. With the challenges came new friends along the way, having better ways to learn how to communicate and take into consideration of others from writing. When being exposed to different people with different forms of speaking the English language, I learned that there can be many unique ways of self expression.

One form can be through poetry but with a modern twist. Lyiscott is a poet who makes her poems sound like a rap and it carries not only a story of unjustness with diversity through industries. Her poem was able to help other black Americans connect by speaking as in the ¨hood¨. I really enjoyed this and learned a lot from this and it helped me understand the attitudes towards linguistic standards and its power inflicted on the community. It helped me realize that the way she wrote her poem mirrored how her community speaks and was able to unite them. I can apply this in the future by allowing the reader to think about their challenges or family’s challenges with different forms of English. It’s insightful by allowing my story to prove how different English can be on an immigrant family, especially Muslim families who don’t speak English well on its impact towards other religions such as Christians.

Another form was in the story of ¨Mother Tongue¨, where I learned how to accept that people can express their life challenges through another person’s point of view, that’s considered as ¨broken English¨. Amy Tan is the author of “Mother Tongue”, she’s an immigrant asian where she’s being guided away from her passion towards the stereotype of what an asian is considered to be. I found her story quite inspiring by how she was able to successfully express the variety of genres and rhetorical situations. By constantly being open to include her own culture and experiences with the English language.

A third form is during Saleem’s Ted talk where he spoke about the lack of diversity being exposed to the people and this creating criticism when finally exposed to a new thing. In his case, it was different accents.  Through imagery and symbolism he challenged the norms by continuing to use his accents in his short films and being able to connect with people who also experience injustice by their unique voices. I found this really interesting because it was an immersive ted talk where he used the greek’s story about how the greek said sheep is purple to using a sheep at the end of his video. His strategies helped me find what strategies I could use during my stories. During peer reviews, I would constantly ask others’ input on my work. There can be many ways that I didn’t realize my work isn’t written properly.

The final form is through print and digital technologies, it´s where I utilized imagery and images to prove a visual appeal to my story. During the Translation one full draft assignment I was able to input in my document images and a detailed story of my experience during my underwater robotics competition. It was a great form to keep the reader to understand my story and also to help them become more immersed in my story as well.
